Reporting to the Staff Veterinarian at the Wyss Institute, the Research Assistant will work on research projects involving rodent survival surgery, inoculations and post-operative care as directed. He/she will be responsible for overseeing study animals, daily rounds and observations to check animal health status; conduct training of scientists and the technical staff in experimental models, development of protocols and techniques at the animal facility; performing and documenting experimental observations in variety of laboratory animal species. The successful candidate will execute in vivo studies requiring in-vivo bio-imaging and data analysis; provide technical support for the development of new animal models and experimental procedures; assist in preparation of Protocol Applications to IACUC; follow standard operating procedures and maintain records to comply with regulatory requirements; maintain accurate records and documentation; manage animal laboratory by maintaining necessary supplies and equipment and interfacing with veterinary staff and research scientists; participate in additional research and development activities as determined by Wyss Institute technical staff and researchers.

Basic Qualifications: B.S. in a Biological Life Science or related area or Veterinary Technology Associate’s Degree is required. At least 2 years of hands on experience with animal models and surgical techniques or related experience is a must. Education may count toward years of experience. Must be able to lift 50 pounds maximum, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 15-30 pounds, and push and pull heavy equipment. Must be able to walk or stand for a full 7-hour shift and be able to perform repetitive motions over extended periods of time. Must be flexible to working outside normal business hours on occasion and when needed. Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts, and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time.

Additional Qualifications: AALAS certification is preferred. A technical background in a vivarium setting (LAT/LATG certification) is preferred. The candidate should be highly motivated, detail-oriented, organized, and able to take initiative. Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently or with minimum supervision on multiple projects across various therapeutic areas are required. Ability to work well independently and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary group is essential. Good communication skills are important. Pharmaceutical or other industrial research experience and familiarity with IACUC protocol operations are preferred. Knowledge of working in a regulatory environment (GLPs, SOPs) is preferred.

Additional Information: This is a term position for one year with the possibility of renewal. Offer contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement medical evaluation.
