WHAT IS THE MATCH CORPS: The Match Corps: Boston is a one-year urban education fellowship focused on our tutoring and mentoring program. The program is overseen by Match Education, our nonprofit organization that operates our three public charter schools alongside our Match Teacher Residency program.
Each year, elite recent college graduates from top universities across the country commit one year to public service designed to help close the achievement gap in Boston, one student at a time. It is possibly the most competitive such program in the nation—just as, if not more, competitive than admission to the Harvard Graduate School of Education or Teach For America.

WHAT IS THE MATCH CORPS: The Match Corps: Boston is a one-year urban education fellowship focused on our tutoring and mentoring program. The program is overseen by Match Education, our nonprofit organization that operates our three public charter schools alongside our Match Teacher Residency program.
Each year, elite recent college graduates from top universities across the country commit one year to public service designed to help close the achievement gap in Boston, one student at a time. It is possibly the most competitive such program in the nation—just as, if not more, competitive than admission to the Harvard Graduate School of Education or Teach For America.
Most of our students will become the first in their families to achieve this goal. Therefore, the demands on our students, teachers, staff and the Match Corps tutors are intense.
THE WORK: Although the Match Corps experience is somewhat different at each of our locations (covering grades from Pre-K to High School), all Corps members are assigned a personal caseload of 6 to 10 students at the beginning of the year. Match Corps members work with their students in small-group or individual tutorials over the course of each day, providing close academic support, mainly in math and English Language Arts, and supporting habits that foster the academic success of their tutees. Unlike traditional tutoring models that happen outside of school hours and only target failing students, all students at the Match Schools participate in two stand-alone class periods of tutoring throughout the day.
Match Corps members work relentlessly to build in-depth relationships with their students, acting as mentors and helping their students reach specific goals. Corps members maintain close contact with students' parents and guardians, building the strong bridge between home and school that is an integral part of the Match philosophy. The school environment is small enough that every Corps member knows every student by name.
WHO ARE THE MATCH CORPS? Match Corps members are high-achievers with a relentless work ethic. The Match Corps Program is highly selective, with a 6% hire rate. Match Corps members span a wide range of career interests, from medicine and law to education and policy, and recent graduates from all majors and disciplines are welcome to apply. Nearly all Match Corps members who apply to graduate school are accepted.
Match Corps Members are:
Recent college graduates who . . .
o Are interested in education and wish to pursue a year of service;
o Are looking for a gap year of high-quality, high-yield service before medical school, law school, or other graduate programs; and
o Are interested in a career in education policy and want a one-year opportunity to experience life on the ground in urban schools in an authentic and meaningful way.
-Career-changers or retired professionals who want to instill their love of learning—especially in math and English language arts—in students.
-People who want to become high-performing, no-excuses
-lead teachers following their year of service (these Match Corps: Boston members also take part in our optional Match Teacher Residency program).
WHAT IS THE MATCH TEACHER RESIDENCY? Match Teacher Residency (MTR) is an optional 12-month program (August through July) running parallel to the Match Corps experience, but is designed for those who know they want to become full-time teachers in urban schools following completion of their year tutoring through the Match Corps program. Simply put, all Match Resident Teachers are members of the Match Corps, but not all members of the Match Corps are Resident Teachers.
As members of the Match Corps, our Resident Teachers perform their normal tutoring and school support duties Monday through Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays, however, our residents participate in targeted, high-quality teacher training and student teaching opportunities to prepare them to be unusually effective rookie teachers in high-performing schools the following year. Match Teacher Residents commit to teach for at least two years in a "No Excuses," high expectations, urban classroom after their year with the Match Corps in Boston.
Every year,100% of residents who complete the Teacher Residency program are hired for full-time lead teaching roles by high-needs, high-performing schools in the Northeast and across the country. While in this full-time job, residents enjoy additional (optional) coaching and take one online class per semester. At the end of their first full year in the classroom following their Match Corps experience, Residents earn a Master’s degree in Effective Teaching (MET) through the Charles Sposato Graduate School of Education.
COMPENSATION AND HOUSING: Corps members receive a modest but comfortable stipend for their services, and housing is available to interested Corps members for a fee (deducted up front from the living stipend). The majority of tutors are also able to defer their student loans during their year of service.
High School Corps members live on the third floor of the Match High School in a dormitory-style living space, while Middle School, Match Community Day, and Match Next Corps members live in furnished apartments near their respective schools. Each year a few Corps members choose to rent their own apartments, which is welcomed.
